✦ Travel smart
From Phoenix: about 3.5 hours (~215 mi) through the Sonoyta–Lukeville border crossing. From Hermosillo: 4 hours on Highway 3.
Puerto Peñasco International Airport (PPE) serves regional flights and private aviation.
Direct lines from Hermosillo, Mexicali and Tucson arrive downtown; shuttles from Tucson take about 4 hours.
International visitors need a valid passport; if driving beyond the border zone, a temporary vehicle permit. Mexican nationals can travel with official ID.
Early beach mornings, sunrise tours to the Pinacate, snorkeling at Bird Island and boardwalk sunsets. The sea is warm (84 °F) and the afternoon breeze cools things down. Hydrate and stay in the shade.
In hotels and tourist restaurants the water is filtered and safe. In rental homes, buy purified bottled water (garrafón), available at any store in town.
Only in permitted areas with authorized operators inside the reserve. The Pinacate core is protected: always go with certified guides.
Shuttles connect Tucson and Phoenix with town; downtown, the boardwalk and nearby beaches are walkable or taxi-close. Renting a car is worth it if you're heading to the Pinacate.
